The renowned Russian writer Leo Tolstoy created a realistic masterpiece in Anna Karenina (1878). In the same work, moreover, he utilized allegory and symbol to an extent and at a level of sophistication unknown in his other works. In Browning’s study, the author identifies and analyzes previously unnoticed or only briefly mentioned “linkages and keystones” found in two highly developed clusters of symbols, arising from Anna’s momentous train ride and peasant nightmares, and of allegories, rooted in Vronsky’s disastrous steeplechase. Within this labyrinth of symbol and allegory lies embedded much of the novel’s most significant meaning. This study will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Russian literature, Tolstoy, symbol, allegory, structuralism, and moral criticism.

Cláudio R. V. Braga perpassa as narrativas de Adichie, principalmente o romance Americanah, discutindo o papel da mulher na atualidade, baseando-se sobretudo na personagem Ifemelu. Quais são as expectativas, angústias e vivências dessa jovem mulher africana, negra e imigrante, oriunda de um país pós-colonial? Existe livre-arbítrio ou as circunstâncias determinam a vida? Qual a relação entre o presente e o passado pós-colonial de pessoas cujos países passaram pelo trauma da colonização europeia? O autor também se dedica à questão da mobilidade humana contemporânea, concebida literariamente por Adichie. Para isso faz uso da teoria da diáspora para abordar a prosa adichieana e questionar: como se dá a tensão entre experiências positivas e negativas vividas pelas pessoas que imigram? Como a mobilidade e sua representação literária influenciam no processo de descolonização cultural do indivíduo pós-colonial? Esses são alguns questionamentos encontrados neste livro, sobre os quais o autor discorre a partir de teorias selecionadas, mas sobretudo à luz da literatura de Adichie. A literatura e os estudos literários constituem formas de se pensar e compreender o que se passa ao nosso redor. Este livro é uma contribuição nesse sentido: o autor Cláudio R. V. Braga investiga a prosa de Chimamanda Adichie, escritora contemporânea globalmente conhecida, propondo uma perspectiva de mundo caracterizada pela pós-colonialidade, que é uma condição dos dias de hoje, perpassada por processos complexos de descolonização cultural e de mobilidade humana em escala global. This is the first book-length study in English of the Japanese-language literary activities of early Japanese migrants to Brazil. It provides a detailed history of Japanese-language bookstores, serialized newspaper fiction, original creative works, and critical apparatuses that existed in Brazil prior to World War II. This case study of the reading and writing of one diasporic population challenges the dominant mode of literary study, in which texts are often explicitly or implicitly understood through a framework of ethno-nationalism. Self-representations by writers in the diaspora reveal flaws in this prevailing framework through what Edward Mack calls “acquired alterity,” in which expectations about the stability of ethnic identity are subverted in surprising ways. Acquired Alterity encourages a reconsideration of the ramifications (and motivations) of cultural analyses of texts and the constructions of peoplehood that are often the true objects of literary knowledge production.

Fragen seiner verfassungsrechtlichen Grundierung und seiner verwaltungsrechtlichen Feinzeichnung sind so umstritten wie lange nicht. In a world wherein work is increasingly feminized, historical and contemporary literature can reveal what ‘women’s work’ entails. Reading across different genres, time periods and geographical locations, this book explores gendered working lives through novels, poetry, comics, editorial work and book collecting. It moves from the library of an early modern noblewoman to protest comics in the 2017 Women’s March, from Virginia Woolf, Adrienne Rich and Buchi Emecheta to writing from the 2020s about motherhood and explores topics as various as gossip, poetic scraps and household management as well as gender-based violence and the creation of feminist solidarity. In doing so, it shows how literary perspectives on labour and gender can provide insights into work that is otherwise made invisible and can help us to better understand the challenges of today’s insecure work-lives.

This book examines the relevance of hunger in the writing of Herman Melville, Franz Kafka, Knut Hamsun, and Richard Wright. It argues that hunger is an important theme not only for the selected works of these authors, but also for the way it is deeply involved with concepts of modernity and modernist literature and how it is bound up with a writer’s role in modern society. In my discussion I draw upon two contentious and complex views of hunger: the first is material, relating to the body as a physical entity that has a material existence in reality. Hunger in this sense is a physiological process that affects the body as a result of the need for food, the lack of which leads to discomfort, listlessness, and eventually death. The second view is that of hunger as an appetite of the mind, the kind of hunger for immaterial things that is normally associated with an individual’s desire for a new form of knowledge, sentiment, or a different way of perceiving the reality of the world. By means of this dualistic approach I address the ongoing discussion regarding the figure of the modern author, a creative individual who strives for independence of thought and action, yet is influenced by the same biological, cultural, and economic forces that shape the rest of society. By introducing the theme of hunger into this debate, I argue that the interaction between the artist’s immaterial, creative life of spontaneous thought and emotion and the way in which this inner life is rooted in the material world of the body offers an approach to the work of these canonical writers that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. The first of this book’s four chapters examines how Melville draws upon two aspects of hunger—appetite and absence—in his portrayal of the scriveners on Wall Street, and it supports the idea that Bartleby exhibits an artistic temperament. Chapter 2 explores the link between modernist art and the alienation of the individual in Kafka’s writing, and it examines how hunger is bound up with both the physical decline and the spiritual withdrawal of Kafka’s heroes, which culminate in their death from starvation. Chapter 3 demonstrates the significance of hunger for Hamsun’s narrator with regard to his self-destructive tendencies, and how his rejection of society and willingness to act against his own interests may be read as an expression of Hamsun adopting an anti-modern stance comparable to that of Dostoevsky’s. Chapter 4 discusses how, in Wright’s text, hunger is bound up with self- fashioning, an important theme in the narrative that is also relevant to an appreciation of the book as an intellectual autobiography. All four chapters discuss how perceptions and experiences of hunger may alter reality in the narrative and how hunger impacts and transforms the substance and conditions of the protagonists’ lives. The works of Melville, Kafka, Hamsun, and Wright can thus be directly linked with conflicting concepts of modernity and its consequences for the individual and the author, as well as with conflicting concepts of a hunger that can be read both as a symbol of a materialist, capitalist modernity and as a potential cure for its inherent ills of greed and indifference. This book examines the inconsistencies and contradictions in the selected authors’ conceptualization of hunger as both desire and absence of desire, or as both a creative and a destructive force, and argues how these contradictions relate to the broader conflicts relating to the writer’s role in modern society.

Chapter 4 discusses how, in Wright’s text, hunger is bound up with self- fashioning, an important theme in the narrative that is also relevant to an appreciation of the book as an intellectual autobiography. All four chapters discuss how perceptions and experiences of hunger may alter reality in the narrative and how hunger impacts and transforms the substance and conditions of the protagonists’ lives. The works of Melville, Kafka, Hamsun, and Wright can thus be directly linked with conflicting concepts of modernity and its consequences for the individual and the author, as well as with conflicting concepts of a hunger that can be read both as a symbol of a materialist, capitalist modernity and as a potential cure for its inherent ills of greed and indifference. This book examines the inconsistencies and contradictions in the selected authors’ conceptualization of hunger as both desire and absence of desire, or as both a creative and a destructive force, and argues how these contradictions relate to the broader conflicts relating to the writer’s role in modern society.

Der dänische Dichter Adam Oehlenschläger gab seinen einzigen Roman Die Inseln im Südmeere (1826) in zwei Sprachen heraus, wobei er zunächst die deutsche Fassung schrieb und erst danach die dänische Version unter dem Titel Øen i Sydhavet verfasste, die 1824/25, also vor der deutschen Ausgabe erschien. Auf der Basis von Johann Gottfried Schnabels Insel Felsenburg gestaltete der Autor ein völlig neues Werk, das in seiner Fülle von Reflexionen, Prätexten, Zitaten, lyrischen Einlagen, Novellen etc. unter Einbezug von Schnabels zentralen Strukturen und Hauptfiguren als vielschichtiger und dynamischer Text erscheint, der aber bisher sowohl beim Lesepublikum wie in der Forschung nur wenig Beachtung gefunden hat. Die vorliegende Untersuchung beleuchtet anhand von Bachtins und Kristevas Polyphonie- und Intertextualitätstheorien die Mehrstimmigkeit und Vielfalt des Romans, wobei die Zweisprachigkeit ebenso einbezogen wird wie die verschiedenen Fassungen, die von der Erstausgabe teilweise stark abweichen. Detaillierte Analysen zeigen, dass der Roman zu seiner Zeit neuartige literarische Verfahren für die Textproduktion fruchtbar machte.

Language, Nation, Race explores the various language reforms at the onset of Japanese modernity, a time when a “national language” (kokugo) was produced to standardize Japanese. Faced with the threat of Western colonialism, Meiji intellectuals proposed various reforms to standardize the Japanese language in order to quickly educate the illiterate masses. This book liberates these language reforms from the predetermined category of the “nation,” for such a notion had yet to exist as a clear telos to which the reforms aspired. Atsuko Ueda draws on, while critically intervening in, the vast scholarship of language reform that engaged with numerous works of postcolonial and cultural studies. She examines the first two decades of the Meiji period, with specific focus on the issue of race, contending that no analysis of imperialism or nationalism is possible without it.

Golden Age departures in historiography and theory of history in some ways prepared the ground for modern historical methods and ideas about historical factuality. At the same time, they fed into the period’s own "aesthetic-historical culture" which amalgamated fact and fiction in ways modern historians would consider counterfactual: a culture where imaginative historical prose, poetry and drama self-consciously rivalled the accounts of royal chroniclers and the dispatches of diplomatic envoys; a culture dominated by a notion of truth in which skilful construction of the argument and exemplarity took precedence over factual accuracy. Literature and Historiography in the Spanish Golden Age: The Poetics of History investigates this grey area backdrop of modern ideas about history, delving into a variety of Golden Age aesthetic-historical works which cannot be satisfactorily described as either works of literature or works of historiography but which belong in between these later strictly separate categories.

Until now little of China's massive literary output of the last thirty years has been available to American readers. Literature of the People's Republic of Chinapresents a generous sampling in translation of the literature written in the PRC from 1949 to the present. Materiality in Modernist Short Fiction provides a fresh approach to reading material things in modern fiction, accounting for the interplay of the material and the cultural. This volume investigates how Djuna Barnes, Katherine Mansfield, and Jean Rhys use the short story form to evoke the material world as both living and lived, and how the spaces they create for challenging gendered social norms can also be nonanthropocentric spaces for encounters between the human and the nonhuman. Ausgehend von einem zeitlichen Spektrum vom 12. bis zum 15. Jahrhundert und anhand modellhafter Konstellationen wird ein für das Verfahren der Kürzung systematisches Profil erarbeitet. Postmodern Crises collects previously published and yet unpublished Mark Lipovetsky’s articles on Russian literature and film. Written in different years, they focus on cultural and aesthetic crises that, taken together, constitute the postmodern condition of Russian culture. A critical interpretation and evaluation of Chinese poetry for English-speaking readers , The Interlingual Critic is a sophisticated exploration of the poetic experience and the nature of translation and criticism. The book is an exercise in comparative poetics that contains elements of autobiography, the phenomenology of reading, the theory of translation, poetics, and hermeneutics, as well as practical criticism. Liu delineates a conceptual framework in which any theory of literature or poetics can be analyzed. This framework is based on the interrelations between world, author, work, and reader, and may be illustrated by a tetradic circle, which is repeated in the process of interpretation, with "critic " replacing "author." Liu goes on to discuss problems involved in reading, translating, interpreting, and evaluating Chinese poetry in an interlingual context. The theoretical discussion is followed by an exercise in practical criticism, in which examples of Chinese poetry are analyzed in terms of time-space-self interrelations, with some comparisons to Western poems. The Interlingual Critic represents a cogent and concise synthesis of Chinese and Western theories of literature that will interest critics and students of other national literatures as well as specialists in Chinese poetry.

In the antebellum period, slave owners weaponized southern Black joy to argue for enslavement while abolitionists wielded sorrow by emphasizing racial oppression. Both arguments were so effective that a political uneasiness on the subject still lingers.
